What is Health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

That means there are the factors to be considered to proclaim someone healthy; physical well-being, mental well-being and social well-being.

However, we’re going focus on physical well-being alone.

PHYSICAL WELL-BEING

You achieve physical well-being when your body is disease free AND at the minimum risk of diseases.

Just like your educational and financial investments, there are investments you make on your physical health to ensure a healthy, comfortable and disease free future.

So how do you make investments on your physical health? This is where fitness and lifestyle come in.

Fitness is the state of health and well-being with the ability to perform daily, occupational and/or sporty activities. Levels of fitness varies among individuals.

It is achieved through your lifestyle and it basically the way you live. It is determined by your daily activities/routine and beliefs.

Note: Your lifestyle also affects your mental and social well-being.

In order to achieve your fitness goals, it has to include adequate nutrition, exercise and rest. You should know that a fit lifestyle is not meant for overweight people alone; and the fact that you’re slim doesn’t make you healthy.

BENEFITS OF A FIT LIFESTYLE

1. It improves your daily physical capacity.

2. It improves your thinking, learning and judgment.

3. It reduces stress, depression and anxiety and improves your mental health.

4. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases e.g. cardiovascular diseases ( hypertension),dementia, cancer, diabetes, and anxiety. It also improves mental health.

5. It aids digestion.

6. It helps control and maintain healthy weight.

7. It improves your skin and overall appearance.

8. It helps manage blood sugar and insulin levels.

9. It improves your sex life.

10. It ensures a fit healthy future even in old age.

HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

1. Adopt a healthy diet

2. Adopt a physical routine or engage in physical activities. WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity or an equivalent combination of both throughout the week.

3. Pay attention to your environment.

4. Know the diseases you’re at risk of (e.g. diseases in your family, diseases associated with your weight, etc.) and adopt measures to prevent them.

5. Don’t self medicate, always see a doctor or the appropriate medical personnel.

6. Rest adequately.

7. Invest in health insurance.

8. Stay away from habits that are detrimental to your health e.g. smoking, alcoholism, sedentary lifestyle, etc.
