I remember when I was seven years old, my father had this brown Audi 80. The car had been used in the US before being sent down. Stuck on the inside of the glove compartment was a diving quote by Edmund Hillary, that read: “It is not the depth we conquer, but ourselves.”
This project was a dive into our past, and dives are scary for a host of reasons. One, it often times requires going to unplanned depths. Two, it is virtually impossible to accurately predict what you might find. Three, personal biases have to be conquered, no matter how sentimental, to present the undiluted truth. Lastly, you have to be a captivating storyteller.
We took a chance, dove and struck gold. A rich history. We spoke with the men and women who made history. They were kind enough to share the parts of history they had lived through with the team. This project recognizes the sacrifices and valor of our heroes past and present. Good people who did, and continue to do, good work. The project team had no problem publishing these objective truths. Truth, whose mother is history, is the rival of time, depository of deeds, witness of the past, a lesson to the present, and warning to the future.
To the future, the team Amodu Abigail would lead and every one after: Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends – honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty, and patriotism – these things are old, time tested and have been proven to be true. They have been the foundation of progress throughout our history. What is absolutely required, is a close relationship with these truths.
What is demanded of us now, is an era of increased personal responsibility – a recognition on the part of every direct and indirect member of the governing council that we have duties to ourselves and our people. Duties that we do not grudgingly acknowledge but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to surmounting a difficult task.
I have to repeatedly acknowledge the efforts of the team leads, Treasure Omeje, and Mojeed Nasiru, who coordinated with AMSA’s Greats(as my Rabbi calls them), the story tellers, the researchers, the writers and the editors.
I also have to acknowledge the graphic designer, Adetutu Adebayo, yet another Amsite, who was so patient and understanding of the excesses and the peculiarity of this project.
I hope to see you on page 104, on behalf of the governing council and all our amazing volunteers, I genuinely wish everyone celebrating a Merry Christmas. I thank you the reader for your patience and attention. God bless you and God bless our student association. Until I share with you our end of tenure reports you have my…
Warmest regards,
